Step by step : STRUCTURE OF THE PADI IDC

The Instructor Development Course is spread over fourteen days, but rather than thinking in terms of calendar dates, it is best described through the different workshops that make up the training.

Each module strengthens a key area of your future role as an instructor, giving you the skills, teaching techniques, and confidence required to succeed.

    Classroom and Knowledge Development

In the classroom sessions you will learn how to design and deliver professional presentations. You will practice explaining dive theory with clarity, covering areas such as physics, physiology, decompression theory, and dive equipment. You will also study PADI standards and procedures, learning how to use the system to ensure both safety and consistency worldwide. By the end, you will know how to conduct engaging theory lessons that inspire confidence in your students.

    Confined Water Teaching

In the confined water environment—either a pool or a calm lagoon—you will refine your ability to perform skill demonstrations to the highest standard. The focus is on precision, positioning, and student control. You will learn how to brief and debrief effectively, recognize common student mistakes, and correct them safely. These workshops develop your teaching presence underwater, ensuring that every demonstration is clear, confident, and professional.

    Open Water Training

During the open water sessions, you will put everything into practice in real-world conditions. You will simulate teaching dives with student divers, manage groups in dynamic environments, and ensure safety protocols are always followed. These workshops emphasize situational awareness, problem-solving, and supervision skills, preparing you for both the Instructor Exam and the reality of teaching in different dive sites around the world.

    Emergency First Response

The EFR Instructor training is an essential component of the IDC. Here you will learn to teach first aid and CPR courses, gaining the ability to deliver effective training not only to divers but also to non-divers. This part of the course strengthens your role as a safety professional, while also meeting the official requirements for the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor rating.

    Mock Instructor Exam

Before attending the official PADI Instructor Exam, you will complete a full-scale simulation under the guidance of your Course Director. This includes practice exams in theory, standards, classroom presentations, confined water, and open water teaching. The mock exam is designed to highlight areas for improvement, give you personalized feedback, and build the confidence you need to perform at your best when it counts.
